We went on another lovely walk in the forest this week! We've been observing lots of insect eggs, butterflies, birds, and growing plants this month in the woods. There's always a lot of excitement over who finds the best walking stick, who will lead the line, and noticing nice dogs that we pass by. The wonderful weather sure made for a great afternoon in the outdoors! |
Millgrove’s annual track meet was a great success today as students got to explore all sorts of track and field events and enjoy a beautiful morning outside. We tried out long distance running, hurdles, throwing challenges, and all sorts of other activities. Volunteers had also organized some wonderful treats for us to enjoy, and we had a wonderful picnic lunch. It was great for students to make use of their growing PE abilities! We had our last Play Parkland trip of the year today as the class went swimming! They've learned so much about gymnastics, swimming, skating, and other sports this year on these field trips, and they were especially excited to cap off the year with one last trip to the pool!
This week the class started practicing some skills in Pickleball, which is a sport with quickly growing popularity! Next week we'll try playing some games which the students are excited for. You can see more about Pickleball below! It was a treat to visit to the Participark this week with our warm temperatures (plus, the trees shielded us from most of the strong winds)! We spotted a squirrel, some pussy willows, and some signs of new life in the woods. As always, the students favourite was exploring the woods and playing Hide and Seek!
We had an awesome time today at the Tri-Leisure Centre as we got a skating lesson and did some yoga on the field! Thanks so much to all the parents who helped tie and untie skates, and even a few who got on the ice to help the students! We couldn't have made it out on the ice without your help, so we really appreciate you!
Our class has cherished watching and cheering for Canada in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics over the past three weeks, and there have been many teachable moments as we saw athletes have great success, but also some heartbreaking moments. The students each researched an Olympic sport and athlete to write about, and did some creative writing in which they invented their own winter Olympic sport. We also had fun exploring the math and science of the winter Olympics, and learning a bit about other countries in the context of our grade three global citizenship learning in Social Studies. It's a bit sad seeing the games come to a close this weekend, but we sure have had fun and learned lots from the Beijing Olympics! Our first Play Parkland visit was a huge success as the students of 3B (and our friends in 3K) had a great time and learned a ton about gymnastics. We had very knowledgeable coaches and the students really enjoyed getting to use the equipment at the Aerials Gymnastics Club. The students are very excited for our next trip to Aerials!
This month we've been practicing a variety of basketball skills, and the class has really enjoyed passing, dribbling, and shooting in PE. The students have been working hard to be in control of the ball like an NBA player, and have been extra careful to keep the ball in their own space. You can watch the video below to see some of the basketball form we've been trying out in PE class! We got to enjoy the first snowy week of this school year with a walk in the woods! The class enjoyed playing hide and seek amongst the trees and exploring the sights, sounds, and smells of the changing weather. We've also highly enjoyed the snow at recess this week (except for the long trudge to and from our recess zones)!
This week we've been honing our hockey skills in PE by practicing some floor hockey drills and games. Hockey is a very popular sport in our class, so many of the students have been elated to show off their hockey moves in the gym!
This week we got to practice our badminton skills in PE! It is tricky to learn to control the birdie with the racket, but the students worked hard and got some great rallies in by the end of the week. You can watch the world's longest badminton rally below, which was 108 shots! We ran our annual Terry Fox run today and Millgrove seemed likely to meet our fundraising goal! The students were very inspired by the story of Terry and how he put others first. They ran hard in the run, and showed great concern for the people they were running for. Our class helped to make the assembly video for this year's run, which you can see above!
We went on our first adventure to the Participark today, and the students enjoyed exploring the sights and sounds and playing and hide and seek in the woods. All in all, it was a warm but successful first trip to the Participark!
This month in PE we've been playing some playground activities, cooperative games, and centres in the gym. So far the students especially enjoyed caterpillar traveling and scooters. It's wonderful to see them working together!
Our class was happy to head back to the Participark this week now that we're back in school together, and we had sightings of some lovely yellow flowers, plenty of butterflies, and even a former Millgrove teacher walking with her husband! Of course, we made sure to play hide and seek in the woods which is always a class favourite!
We've been playing speedball in PE this week, and the class has done a wonderful job working as a team to share the ball and try to earn points. The teams are allowed to use a "warm defence" to stop the other team's progress and get the ball back, and there has been lots of good sportsmanship and team spirit in the games so far!
