In preparation for the Tokyo Olympics this summer, 2B held its own Paper Kicking Olympics in Math this week. We’ve been practicing two-digit addition recently in Math, so the students worked hard to measure and tabulate their totals, and their were some impressive kicks! Some of the students challenged themselves to add up the totals of large groups of students, which led to some very accurate three-digit addition

In Science recently the students had to plan a waterproofing solution for some pretend placemats that we were planning for our prospective (pretend) Millgrove Restaurant. The students set to work testing out different solutions to our restaurant's problem. They found that wax crayons and rubber cement made the paper waterproof, but felt markers and pencils did a poor job. We recommended that the restaurant use the wax crayons because customers likely wouldn't want their lunch tasting like rubber cement! We also examined different densities of liquids, and the absorbencies of different materials. We found that corn syrup is very dense, while cooking oil has a very low density. We also discovered that sponges are extremely absorbent, while nylon fabric, plastic wrap, and tinfoil are extremely poor absorbers. 2B would certainly suggest using a sponge rather than tinfoil to clean up a spill! Given the students' growing skills with two-digit addition and subtraction, they were given a mission this week to make a selection of toys for themselves with a budget of $100. All the students stayed within the budget (except for a few who felt confident to add beyond $100), and their selections and adding strategies were varied and impressive. We look forward to planing more shopping trips with our math skills!
Today was the inaugural I Read Canadian Day across the country, and we celebrated it in 2B! We read "Red is Best" by Kathy Stinson, "Purple, Green and Yellow" by Robert Munsch, "The Flying Canoe" by Roch Carrier, and "My Heart Fills with Happiness" by Monique Gray Smith. We love Canada, and Canadian literature!
We had a great Valentine's Day in 2B! We wrote friendly letters in the morning, exchanged valentine cards and candies, played some games, and enjoyed the delicious treats that parents that parents kindly sent in. The class very thoughtfully reflected that some of their favourite moments were giving treats and cards to their friends, which was quite sweet. There are plenty of great friendships to be celebrated in 2B!
We learned lots and had lots of fun today at Telus World of Science! We got to watch a special presentation in the Zeidler Dome, and we participated in the Splish Splash program led by our science expert which tied into our class' unit on Exploring Liquids. We also got to explore a number of the exhibits in the facility thanks to our five wonderful volunteers!
This Wednesday was the 14th annual winter walk day in Alberta, and our class enjoyed participating with most other classes at Millgrove. 2B went on a walk through the Participark and explored some of the trails and nature there. After the walk, we had some hot chocolate to warm up after our long journey. It was a great day to enjoy some fresh air, get some exercise, and have fun with our classmates!
We're almost done our focus on measurement in Math, and the students have really enjoyed measuring mass using a variety of units. They've become pros at estimating, measuring, and comparing different masses, and selecting the appropriate unit to use when measuring mass. Check out some of the games we've been playing during this unit below
