We’ve been learning about fairy tales and fractured fairy tales in 2B for the past month. Fractured fairy tales are based on classic fairy tales, but the setting, characters, problem, solution, or some other element of the story are changed. The students had great fun reading a variety of fractured fairy tales, and wrote their own fractured fairy tale books. Check out a couple of the fractured fairy tales below and how we planned them using a graphic organizer. You can even practice writing your own fractured fairy tale using the game linked below!

Recently we've been working with dot collections from Gerri Lorway to look for smaller groups of dots within a set of them. The students have loved using these different images to estimate the amount of dots after just seeing them for a flash, and then analyzing the sets of dots to decompose them into different groups. This helps us to use the commutative property and associative property (see above), and as Gerri Lorway says, "The ability to flexibly name numbers is foundational to building long term recall of facts."
The students to 2B have been demonstrating growing skills with two-digit addition and subtraction, so today they were given a mission to make a pretend selection of toys for themselves using online children's stores with a budget of $100. All the students stayed within the budget (with a few approvals to go over budget if their three-digit math was accurate), but their selections and adding strategies were varied and impressive. We look forward to planing more shopping trips with our math skills!
Our focus in Social Studies continues to be on life in three communities within Canada: an Inuit, an Acadian, and a Prairie community. We are about to start a unit that focuses specifically on the economic characteristics of these communities. Children will learn about:
Children will be better able to understand the concepts in this unit if they can make connections with familiar content through you. Here are some ways you can be involved:

We had the privilege of watching the play Aladdin performed by Stony Plain Central School this week! The play had music, lots of comedy from the genie, and some amazing costumes. One of our class' favourite moments of the play was the confetti that came down on us part way through the performance, and we got to ask the actors and director questions after the play. One of our students even got to join in a dance scene during the play. The class wrote reviews of the play when we got back to school, and Aladdin garnered high praise from 2B!
We learned lots and had lots of fun today at Telus World of Science! We got to watch the Thermal Theatrics demonstration on the science stage which tied in perfectly with our unit on hot and cold temperatures, and we participated in the Splish Splash program led by our science expert Derek which culminated our class' unit on Exploring Liquids. We also got to explore a number of the exhibits in the facility thanks to our four wonderful volunteers!
