The learning goals for this unit are to:
- Describe, compare, and sort 3D objects according to their attributes, such as whether they roll or stack and have curved or flat parts
- Describe, compare, and sort 2D shapes according their attributes, such as whether they have corners or straight sides
- Make models to represent 3D objects
- Make models to represent 2D shapes
- Identify 2D shapes on 2D objects found in the environment
You can help your child achieve these goals with the following activities at home:
- With your child, look for examples in your home of some of the shapes your child has learned about, such as circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares. Which do you find most often?
- Ask your child about the models we are making at school, and what steps they took to build the model
- With your child, hunt for objects that are examples of cubes, spheres, pyramids, cones, and cylinders. Have your child choose 2 objects and tell how they are the same and how they are different.
- Ask your child to think of an object that has curved edges and explain how they know.
- Have your child use large red and small green circles to make a pattern in 2 different ways. Ask, "How are the patterns the same? How are they different?"
- Invite your child to help put away groceries. Talk about why you place particular packages or supplies together based on their shape.
