Now that we've wrapped up our learning about Peru, this week we celebrated Easter Ukrainian style by decorating eggs (or “pysanky”). The students used kitskas and beeswax to create designs on their eggs, and we used real Ukrainian dyes. It was very exciting to see how they turned out after we’d melted all the wax off. з Великоднем! (Happy Easter)!

3B has been working hard in our look at 2D shapes and 3D objects in Math this week. Geometric shapes are all around us, and mathematics can help your child recognize them. Understanding geometric form will help your child appreciate the geometry found in art, design, architecture, and nature.
In this unit, the students will:
You can encourage your child to look for geometric shapes and objects around the home and neighbourhood, and talk about them. Here are some suggestions for activities that you can do at home:
So far we’ve learned how to describe and compare shapes and objects using words like vertices, edges, faces, and length. You can see some of our explorations in the pictures below! To wrap up our learning on Hearing and Sound in Science, the students designed and built their own musical instruments this week! The instruments needed to create a variety of pitches, and it was fun to see many different sounds being made by the instruments. The class' favourite part of the day was creating bands and performing songs for each other. Their performances were entertaining to say the least!
Our writing project this week was to write a story based on the book "Where's My Hockey Sweater." Students worked on having a clear story structure, rich vocabulary, and a funny catchphrase. You can see some of the results below!
We were hard at work on our research skills this week as students used paper and Internet sources to create travel brochures all about the country of Peru! The class was thoughtful about what details about Peru might entice potential travelers, and showcased Peru's culture nicely. A few of their favourite Peru facts included information about Carnival, llamas and alpacas, Christmas celebrations, the Inca people, and the three different regions in Peru. Research is hard work, but it paid off with this project! We were very lucky this week to take part in Meet Your Rep Day hosted by CIVIX, a non-partisan charity dedicated to building the skills and habits of active and engaged citizenship among young Canadians. We were able to connect with our M.P. for Sturgeon River--Parkland, The Honourable Mr. Lloyd M.P. The students worked hard learning about Canada's House of Commons and coming up with questions linked to our Social Studies learning this year. They did a marvellous job listening attentively, asking interesting questions, and demonstrating respect to our special guests Mr. Lloyd, our Parkland School Division's Board Vice-Chair Mr. Cameron, and our wonderful principal Mrs. Madge. The students have a stronger understanding of what democracy looks like in our country, and Mr. Lloyd was very flexible answering our questions and encouraging the students to become active citizens!
There was a great deal of excitement this week over St. Patrick’s Day, and we had our suspicions in 3B that a leprechaun would pay a visit to our classroom before we got there on Wednesday morning. As we suspected, the sneaky Louie the Leprechaun had been in our classroom overnight scattering classroom items, leaving a backwards note, and hiding our shoes around the classroom. He even left a puzzle for us to solve with some candy treats. Let’s hope that next year Louie isn’t quite so sneaky at Millgrove School!
We are extremely lucky to have welcomed the wonderful Miss Careless to our classroom this past week! Miss Careless will be with us until April 27 as she completes this practicum for her Elementary Education degree at the University of Alberta. It's been great to have two teachers in our classroom, and Miss Rebecca's caring heart, thoughtfulness, and fun teaching have already been a great asset to our class. She's already started teaching some of our Math, and the students are now experts on geometry thanks to her teaching! This week the students have been delighted to work on and solve an animal kidnapping mystery using their Math skills to uncover clues. They used their powers of deduction to narrow down the list of suspects to find the villain and rescue kidnapped pets (while practicing their skills with three-digit addition, fractions, multiplication, division, and perimeter). When I asked if they'd like to solve another mystery later this year, they replied with an adamant yes, so we'll try our hands at another mystery later this year!
This week we started practicing our badminton skills in PE! It is tricky to learn to control the birdie with the racket, but the students worked hard and got some great rallies in by the end of the week. You can watch the world's longest badminton rally below, which was 108 shots You may have heard of March Madness, but 3B is taking part in a book tournament called March Book Madness this month. There is a bracket of 16 entertaining and interesting picture books, and we have enjoyed reading the selections. We start voting next week to see which books move on in the tournament. The students have their different favourites, but so far the most popular book has been Our Place in the Universe. We’ll keep you posted on which books make it to the next round of March Book Madness!
With our learning about Peru recently, we’ve been talking a lot about the importance of llamas to the culture and economy. This week we made art based on the bright contrasting colours of Peruvian textiles and the llamas that live in the Peruvian mountains. We learned about shepherds and Inca traditions with llamas, and the students did lovely job depicting the llamas and textiles Our latest writing unit is about figures of speech and how we can incorporate them into our writing. So far, we’ve have an introduction to similes, metaphors, and oxymora, and next week we’ll learn about hyperbole, understatement, euphemisms, and personification. The students especially loved learning about sports metaphors and writing some “trash talk” for their own pretend teams using metaphors, and they enjoyed looking for similes and oxymorons in music and movies. Their writing including these figures of speech has been lively and imaginative, and it will be fun to see them use all seven figures of speech in their writing pieces next week! This week we started our Math unit on fractions! Students will build upon their real-world experiences of “fair shares” to recognize a fraction as an expression that relates a part and a whole. In this unit we will:
We use fractions every day in many different situations. Encourage your child to recognize the use of fractions in daily life, for example, when filling a glass half full, measuring ingredients for a recipe, or sharing an apple. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the concept of fractions: Fraction Activities
