At the beginning of each new week, parents will receive an email with that week's ten spelling words. The words will also be posted along with games at Spelling City. Students will practice reading and spelling those words every day in the classroom, but it is also important to take about ten minutes to review the words with your child each night. Students can play the games available on Spelling City, and use some of the ideas posted here and here. At the end of each week (usually on Friday) students will be tested on the words.
Ten of the spelling words focus on a spelling rule such as short vowels or silent e, and two words are common words that are frequently used in children’s writing. In the class we are also focusing on one word family a week (such as can, fan, ban, and ran). Knowing these spelling patterns will equip students to read and spell more than 500 words commonly used by young children!
