Language Arts
January 4 - 8
Penguin Week!
This week our tasks in Language Arts will be to:
- Write every day in your writing notebook (see below for ideas of what to write about) and edit that writing for writing conventions and quality
- Read every day using books at home or online (with Epic or Raz-Kids)
- Practice your spelling every day using the links to Google Classroom and Spelling City below
- Complete the questions in the Reading Comprehension booklet that was sent home for this week
Writing at Home
Please have your child write every day if possible to keep in practice. Your child brought home their writing book to use for this week, and for this week they can write about topics of their choosing. After each day of writing, please encourage your child to look back at their writing to edit for capitals, punctuation, spelling, and writing quality.
Below I have posted some writing ideas based on this week's theme of penguins if your child would like to write about some of those. Feel free to write fiction or non-fiction pieces this week, whatever you'd like!

Reading at Home
If possible, please have your child read every day for a good chunk of time; quality reading time is one of the most crucial components of students' learning! Your child might be reading hard copy books, or if you'd like them to read online using Epic or Raz-Kids, you can check out the directions below.
If your child is using Epic, please work with them to find books that are just right for them (they need to choose books where they can read almost every single word). Audiobooks or "Read to Me" books are good occasionally, but ideally your child should be reading the words most of the time in a book without auditory support. Epic will be available during school hours, but usually becomes inaccessible after the school day due to that website's funding model. Raz-Kids provides content at your child's reading level, but sometimes students prefer the variety on Epic.
On Epic, our class code is tsu3631, and the students should be familiar with choosing their profile from there. On Raz-Kids, my teacher username is caitjane, and students should know their password. You can access these platforms through the websites linked below, or by downloading the apps.
If your child is reading below grade level (let me know if you're not sure), and was working on sight words and phonics in class, I've included some activities to practice at the bottom of this page.
Happy reading!

Spelling at Home
Students can practice their spelling words for this week on Google Classroom and Vocabulary A-Z. They log in to Google Classroom their Google username and password that was sent home (such as [email protected] and red.bike). They login to Vocabulary A-Z using my username barkermillgrove and their Raz-Kids password.
The students have accessed these websites every week to find their weekly words, activities, and games, but feel free to send me a message if you need help getting set up. Students work on the spelling list from Vocabulary A-Z that matches their spelling level (the fruit-related spelling groups are pictured to the right). There is an outline below of the different Words Their Way activities we use in our weekly Monday-Friday routine to practice our words. I've also attached a document when you click here with some offline ways to practice spelling words if that's preferable for you. |
Extra Writing Ideas
For Students Reading Below Grade Level
Long Vowel Sounds
If you would like to do some extra practice on phonics, this week our focus will be a review of the long vowel sounds. You can practice by reading the below book, clicking here to work through the worksheets (either visually or by writing them out), and playing the games below.
You can also keep practicing sight words with your child: click here to go to the sight word page (it's also linked at the top of this website under "more"). Reading on Raz-Kids is also a great way for these readers to practice reading at their just-right level!
