This week in Science we performed several experiments with water that explored its property of cohesion. Cohesion means that water molecules are attracted to each other which makes water droplets tend to stick together. Because of cohesion, there is surface tension at the surface of water, and we were able to do all sorts of neat tricks with the water because of the unique property of this liquid!

In preparation for the Tokyo Olympics this summer, 2B held its own Paper Kicking Olympics in Math this week. We’ve been practicing two-digit addition recently in Math, so the students worked hard to measure and tabulate their totals, and their were some impressive kicks! Some of the students challenged themselves to add up the totals of large groups of students, which led to some very accurate three-digit addition!
This week with the Safety Lady we learned about fire safety. We practiced leaving a burning building, learned about making an evacuation plan with our families, and got to see how firefighters stay safe and help people in emergencies You can watch the video above to learn more about fire safety.
In Social Studies this past week, we were lucky to have some Inuit artifacts from the Royal Alberta Museum in our classroom. We learned about many interesting aspects of Inuit culture, and were able to use a variety of items including an ulu (multipurpose knife), traditional pulling game, kimiik, art, and a soapstone carving. We’re lucky to learn about such an interesting group of people in grade two! Each student became the expert on an artifact, and our friends in 2A, 2S, and 2W came to visit our mini-museum and learn about the artifacts form our class. You can watch the video above to hear from some 2B experts sharing about these fascinating artifacts, and watch the video below to hear Inuit throat singing. We've been very lucky to have the Safety Lady visiting our classroom over the past couple of weeks to teach us about safety around our homes and school, along with first aid. She is a true safety expert and she has made her Wednesday visits to our classroom extremely engaging and informative. This upcoming week she's coming to teach us all about fire safety. You can expect the students of 2B to be extra vigilant about their own safety and the safety of those around them now! We had a great time learning about Chinese New Year this week! We learned from books and some online research about this special holiday, and the students were especially interested to learn about their Chinese Zodiac sign and learn how to do some Chinese calligraphy. Our class learned about the history of the Lunar New Year celebrations, and we got to partake in the celebrations with our own Hongbao (red envelopes) and special New Year candy. Happy Year of the Rat! Gong hei fat choy! We’ve been learning all about measuring length this week in our math classes and the highlight of our measuring was comparing the lengths of our limbs, torsos, and heads. We found that if we used different units (such as small snap cubes vs. popsicle sticks) our measurements were different (but still indicated the same length). You can watch the video below and play the games that are linked to learn more about measuring length. We had a very atypical week at Millgrove this week as temperatures were below -40°C with windchill (which provided some excellent conversations surrounding our Hot and Cold Temperature learning in Science). The students researched Arctic animals, learned tried out some new games in Math, performed some Reader's Theatre, and got to do some special activities like coding and soccer with the other grade two classes at Millgrove. It was a fun week, but by the end of a week without outside recess, I think we will all welcome the normal temperatures due to arrive this week! Today we made illustrations of snow globes in Art class. The students had fun making creative choices about what to fill their snow globes with, and they turned out great! They had to be extra careful because they drew their outlines in sharpie, and you can see their excellent focus in the photos below. You can see your child's snow globe art on Seesaw.
This week we've been practicing a variety of basketball skills, and the class has really enjoyed passing, dribbling, and shooting in PE. The students have been working hard to be in control of the ball like an NBA player, and have been extra careful to keep the ball in their own space. You can watch the video above to see some of the basketball form we've been trying out in PE class!
In our first unit in Social Studies, we learned about the land in the communities of Iqaluit in Nunavut, Meteghan in Nova Scotia, and Saskatoon in Saskatchewan. We will now revisit the communities and focus on people and culture in those communities—the Inuit, the Acadians, and the Ukrainians. Through stories, activities and research, we will:
Your child will be better able to make connections with material presented in class if he or she has experiences and knowledge to draw on. Here is how you can help:
We invite you to share your cultural background with us. Would you be willing to come to class and share some information? Do you have any materials you could lend us? Here are some specifics of what we are looking for: Traditions—Are there any traditions, celebrations, special foods or recipes, special games or objects you could show or talk about? Language—Is there another language spoken in your home? Perhaps you and your child could share some simple words or books in that language with the class. Music or Art—Do you have any music or art that reflects your culture? Can you show us any traditional clothing? You can watch the video above to see a glimpse of the lovely people in Iqaluit! |
