Week 13 of Activities
June 15 - 19
Canada Week!
This week we will just have one assignment: to make a board game all about Canada! The mini-lessons are posted below, and please also have your child read lots as usual. I've highlighted some additional Canadian books further down this page if your child would be interested in reading those!
Literacy Assignment for Week 13
To be submitted to Mrs. Barker by the end of the week
Assignment: Canada Board Game
- This week we will be capping off our remote learning and our work on Canada this year by making a board game to test participants' knowledge of Canada!
- You can download and print this template if you'd like, or draw a simple board game path on paper (it doesn't need to be fancy)
- See the example below of my Edmonton version of a board game (you'll be making yours about Canada), and watch the videos below for more information about creating a board game
- In the mini-lessons section, I have posted some read-alouds of books about Canada where you can get facts to include in your board game
- There are also some videos about Canada in the "At Home" page for this week where you can find facts
- Make sure to include points to add up in some form in your game so that you complete this week's math assignment 1 (adding up the points when playing your game)

(This example is a game all about Edmonton, and the students' will be all about Canada)
Mini-Lessons
Extra Writing at Home
If your child has completed their writing assignment and has more time, they can start another piece of writing (in class when a student finishes early I always encourage them to revise their work start on something new to make the most of our writing practice time). Below are some writing prompts for Canada Week.
Happy Birthday
July 1 is Canada's birthday, and the day we celebrate Canada Day. What would you give Canada as a gift and why? Pen Pal Imagine you have a pen pal in another country. Explain why we celebrate Canada Day. |
Canadian Pride
What situations make you feel proud to be Canadian? Explain why. Canada Day Fireworks Normally on Canada Day we have fireworks to celebrate. What are your favourite kinds of fireworks? If you designed a fireworks show, what would it be like? |
Reading at Home
If possible, please have your child read every day for a good chunk of time; quality reading time is one of the most crucial components of students' learning! Your child might be reading hard copy books, or from Epic or Raz-Kids. If you need a reminder about how to access Epic or Raz-Kids, you can check out the directions from the Week 2 page here in the Reading at Home section.
If your child is reading below grade level (let me know if you're not sure), and was working on sight words and phonics in class, I've attached some beginning activities to get back to some of that practice at the bottom of this page. I will change and add to those activities each week.

Spelling at Home
Students can practice their spelling words for this week on Spelling City. Their username and password are the same as their Google username and password (such as caitb1234 and red.bike). Students have accessed this website before to find the games for this week, but feel free to comment if you need help finding the games. They should be able to log on, go to Lists & Games, find the list from the group "All This Week" and then select Games.
I've also attached a document when you click here with some offline ways to practice spelling words if that's preferable for you.

Week 13: Eed Word Family
We officially our Reading Roots lessons last week! Our focus this week will now be the eed word family (words like feed, seed, and weed). You can practice by reading the poem to the right (download a larger version here), working through the worksheets (you can download the worksheets here), and playing the games below.
Please keep practicing your child's sight words: click here to go to the sight word page (it's also linked at the top of this website under "more") and select the group of words that your child was working on. Reading on Raz-Kids is also a great way for these readers to practice reading at their just-right level! |
