Language Arts Week Three
May 17- 20
Olympics Week!
This week our tasks in Language Arts will be to:
- Write every day in your writing notebook (see below for your daily writing prompts, you can click here for a writing template if you want)
- Read every day using books at home or online (with Epic or Raz-Kids)
- Practice your spelling every day using the links to Google Classroom and Vocabulary A-Z below
- Complete pages 9-17 in the Reading Comprehension booklet (you should have a paper version that was sent home)
Writing at Home
Please have your child write every day if possible to keep in practice. After each day of writing, please encourage your child to look back at their writing to edit for capitals, punctuation, spelling, and writing quality. The writing assignment for each day is posted below.
Reading at Home
Daily quality reading time is one of the most crucial components of students' learning! Your child might be reading hard copy books, or if you'd like them to read online using Epic or Raz-Kids, you can check out directions on how to access those sites from this page.
If your child is reading below grade level (let me know if you're not sure), and was working on sight words and phonics in class, I've included some activities to practice at the bottom of this page. |

Spelling at Home
Students can practice their spelling words for this week on Google Classroom and Vocabulary A-Z. They log in to Google Classroom their Google username and password that was sent home (such as [email protected] and red.bike). They login to Vocabulary A-Z using my username cait jane and their Raz-Kids password.
The students have accessed these websites every week to find their weekly words, activities, and games, but feel free to send me a message if you need help getting set up. Students work on the spelling list from our Spelling City that matches the name of their sort this week (from Google Classroom). That sort will be the last sort listed in their Vocabulary A-Z assignments. There is an outline below of the different Words Their Way activities we use in our weekly Monday-Friday routine to practice our words. I've also attached a document when you click here with some offline ways to practice spelling words if that's preferable for you. |
For Students Reading Below Grade Level
Long O, A, and I Sounds
This week our focus in reading work will be four way of spelling the long o, a, and i sounds. You can practice by reading the below book, working through the worksheets (you can download the worksheets here), and playing the games below.
You can also keep practicing sight words with your child: click here to go to the sight word page (it's also linked at the top of this website under "more"). On the page for each set of sight words, the 25 words to practice are listed there, along with download links for flashcards and a booklet if you feel like printing those off or writing them out. There are links to a fridge magnet game where your child can write out their words, and there's a video for students to practice reading the words quickly (in about 3 seconds or less) and a list of ideas for how to practice the sight words. Reading on Raz-Kids is also a great way for these readers to practice reading at their just-right level! |

Games
You can check out online games from the Language Arts pages from previous weeks to practice some vowel sounds!
There is an online phonics program called Lalilo that has made its services free during this pause from school. I have not used it previously, but have experiments with it and think it could work well as phonics practice for students who need that.
If you think online practice like that could be a good fit for your child and you'd like to try it, let me know and I can sign you up! |
