We've been paying close attention to the provincial election this month, and have used resources from Student Vote to inform ourselves about different parties and candidates in Spruce Grove. The students each voted today, and they found it very exciting to tabulate our anonymous votes. It's clear there are some engaged citizens (and voters) of the future in 3B! In one of our most highly anticipated events this year, Fit Set Ninja came to our school today so we could work through a variety of challenging and fun obstacles! The students had fantastic attitudes, worked hard, and showed off their strength and agility for our entire block with the ninjas. The 3B students can be proud of a morning overcoming some impressive challenges! To celebrate the warm weather and the arrival of spring, Millgrove had a day themed around one of spring’s best things – rainbows! Our class enjoyed the many colours that people dressed up in, and we had fun with some rainbow-themed dancing and literature. It's always special to see the school come together, and it was definitely a colourful bunch at Millgrove today! In addition to the museum this week, we were lucky enough to visit the Art Gallery of Alberta thanks to the help of our wonderful volunteers! Students investigated some important elements of art, and visited gallery spaces to discover how artists tell stories about places in their artwork. The class was fascinated with the amazing building, and it felt special to see famous and important pieces of art.
The big highlight four our class this week was getting to visit the Royal Alberta Museum! We learned lots about Indigenous peoples, Alberta's history, Albertan animals, rocks & minerals, fossils, vehicles, and bugs. A big thanks goes out to our wonderful volunteers who led groups, and the students did a great job trekking around the large building. We wrote journals this afternoon summarizing what we'd learned, and it was neat to see all the different things that stuck out to them during our trip.
We were so lucky this week to watch a special performance of Jack and the Beanstalk by Alberta Opera! There were songs, jokes, and surprise endings, and the set of the musical performance was very impressive too. It was fun to see an interesting twist on a classic story!
This week the class started practicing some skills in Pickleball, which is a sport with quickly growing popularity! Next week we'll try playing some games which the students are excited for. You can see more about Pickleball below! Happy Mother’s Day! The students were thrilled to take home their Mother’s Day poems this past week that they had worked so hard on. Thank you to all you fantastic 3B moms, grandmas/nanas/omas, aunts, and other wonderful women who love these children so very well!
We had the privilege of watching a performance of The SpongeBob Musical performed by Spruce Grove Composite High School today! The play had music, lots of comedy, and some amazing costumes. Some favourite moments included Pearl singing, Patrick's devoted followers, and SpongeBob's impressive acting. The class wrote reviews of the play when we got back to school, and We Will Rock You garnered high praise from 3B!
Our May weather has been splendid so far, and we’ve been taking advantage of these warm days with lots of outdoor PE. We learned the rules of Capture the Flag this week, and soon we'll be honing our skills in some other outdoor pursuits. Here’s hoping that more outdoor PE days lie ahead!
To celebrate the students’ completing their poetry anthologies this week, we had a Poetry Café today. We listened to café music, and Mrs. Barker the barista had some sweet treats and chocolate milk prepared for the poets. The class had fun reading their poems to each other (there were lots of laughs), and all the students should be proud of their lovely collections of poetry!
A talented band and choir from Weyburn, Saskatchewan visited our school this morning for a very special performance. It's neat to see how far the musical skills we're learning at school with Mrs. Davies can take students a few years down the line!
3B has been working hard in our look at 2D shapes math this week. Geometric shapes are all around us, and mathematics can help your child recognize them. Understanding geometric form will help your child appreciate the geometry found in art, design, architecture, and nature. In this unit, the students will:
You can encourage your child to look for geometric shapes and objects around the home and neighbourhood, and talk about them. Here are some suggestions for activities that you can do at home:
So far we’ve learned how to describe and compare shapes and objects using words like vertices, edges, faces, and length. You can see one of our explorations in the pictures below! It was an exciting day at Millgrove that finished off with a Pep Rally assembly! We celebrated the different clubs at school, chanted cheers that each grade had written, and sang our Millgrove Song. There's so much to be proud of at Millgrove School, and we certainly experienced that today!
On the first Wednesday in May, we wear hats to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. We talked about mental heath, mental illness, and how we can remove the stigma associated with mental illnesses. Plus, there were some very lovely hats being sported around Millgrove all day today!
We've had a delightful month with the chicks, and they officially made the trip back to their farm today! We got to meet Mrs. Hardy who taught us a lot about the chicken life cycle and how the chicks will live on the farm. The class was very sad to see them go because we've grown accustomed to their silly antics, musical chirping, and cuddly-soft feathers. We learned so much about their life cycles, and the students were devoted caretakers to these newborns. The students of 3B were wonderful chick parents!
