What a great year we’ve had in 2B! It’s been a privilege to teach this group of caring, bright, and creative students! The arrival of summer break is certainly exciting, but I will miss this group very much. I hope you have a restful, fun, and memorable summer!

We’ve really been enjoying playing Breakout Edu games this month to review our learning in grade two. The Breakout box is a student-friendly version of breakout or escape rooms where people have to solve puzzles to escape the room. In our Breakout games, the students had to use their knowledge from math, science, and social studies to solve a variety of clues that unlocked the locks on our Breakout box (which contained small prizes). So far the students have beat the timer on all our Breakout Edu games! The mealworms in our classroom have officially emerged as mealworm beetles, and we released them into a forested area this week. We talked about the needs of these animals and chose a spot where they’d have access to shelter, food, water, and air. We’re looking forward to possibly seeing these beetles in their new habitat when we visit the Participark in the future!
Eric Carle’s books are a popular reading choice in our class, and this past week we made art inspired by the illustrations in his books. You can click here to see how Eric Carle makes his pictures, and watch the video below to check out the art he created for a recent book. The students’ creatures were carefully crafted and very fun as you can see below! Our class created some Reader’s Theatre audio productions this month. We worked on rereading to develop fluency, speaking with expression and phrasing, and accurately portraying characters when practicing the scripts for these acting productions. There were four acting casts, and you can view their productions (with accompanying illustrations) above and below! As we are wrapping up our learning about communities and cultures in Canada, the students each chose a community to create a board game for. Much like Edmontonopoly, these board games were designed to reflect the culture, land, and unique characteristics of the students’ chosen Canadian communities. We had a board game party where we got to play each other’s games, and the class had a blast admiring each other’s creativity and celebrating their learning in Social Studies this year.
Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing 2B dads! The students in our class have been working hard on sculpting inuksuks, painting them, writing and handcrafting cards, and decorating their wrapping for their dads. The effort they put into their gifts were evidence of how much they love their dads (and even some grandpas)!
The students expanded their repertoire of coding skills this week as they programmed a variety of behaviours and interactions for the robots Dash and Dot. The robots were telling jokes, dancing, and navigating around the classroom with their programmed sequences and responses to the environment. 2B found has been finding coding very rewarding and entertaining! We were privileged this week to pay a visit to 3C where their chicks recently hatched! We learned about the chicks' diet, development, and needs in their classroom environment. The students even got to hold and pet the chicks which was a big highlight!
We’ve been working on data analysis in Math recently, and the class has enjoyed collecting and analysing a variety of information. In this unit, your child will be learning about graphs, and about asking questions to gather information! The Learning Goals for this unit are to:
You can help your child reach these goals through the following activities:
We’ve started coding in our class, which means that we’re telling a computer, app, phone, or website what we want it to do. This week we used an app called Lightbot and a couple of robots named Dash and Dot to practice our skills in communicating, solving complex problems, and thinking logically and critically. As this CBC article reports, Today, computing is involved in almost all aspects of our lives, from communications and education to social media, banking, information, security and shopping. Networked computers are capable of controlling our homes’ thermostats and lighting, our cars and our health records. You can read more about the thinking behind students being exposed to coding here, and we will keep you updated on our further adventures in coding! This past week we’ve spent part of our science time learning about ants and mealworms as both species of invertebrate are living in our classroom. We learned about the anatomy and diet of mealworms, and have spent a great deal of time learning about ants and observing them cooperatively make tunnels in our ant farm. Did you know that the mass of all ants on Earth combined is more than the mass of all humans? We have been impressed with how strong, resilient, and coordinated they are! Watch the video below to see the ants we have in our ant farm. |
