Our first Play Parkland visit was a huge success as the students of 2B (and our friends in 2CV) had a great time and learned a ton about gymnastics. We had very knowledgeable coaches and the students really enjoyed getting to use the equipment at the Aerials Gymnastics Club. The students haven’t stopped asking when we get to go again

It was a thrilling week at Millgrove School as the students of 2B and a small group of teachers got to use the Micro 3D printer to print off some geographic models and some 3D creations designed by the teachers. The grade two students in 2B have been building their knowledge of the geography of Saskatoon, Meteghan, and Iqaluit, and so it was very exciting to watch the printer print off models of the topography of these three communities using the website Terrain2STL.
The students had to guess which location was being printed each time using their knowledge, and they fared quite well. They observed the flat land of Saskatoon with the river banks breaking up the landscape, the rocky cliffs and extensive forests in Meteghan, and rocky land with no plant life by the coast near Iqaluit. A group of teachers from Millgrove School and Duffield School created keychains with their names (or children's names) using their newly-created accounts on Tinkercad. Their first 3D creations were very impressive, and some of them got printed off on the Micro 3D printer. Nearly anything can be personalized with a 3D printer! This week with the Safety Lady we learned about fire safety. We practiced leaving a burning building, learned about making an evacuation plan with our families, and got to see how firefighters stay safe and help people in emergencies You can watch the video above to learn more about fire safety.
We’ve been learning all about measuring length this week in our math classes and the highlight of our measuring was comparing the lengths of our limbs, torsos, and heads. We found that if we used different units (such as small snap cubes vs. popsicle sticks) our measurements were different (but still indicated the same length). You can watch the video below and play the games that are linked to learn more about measuring length We really enjoyed playing a Breakout Edu game this past Friday to review our learning in Math. The Breakout box is a student-friendly version of breakout or escape rooms where people have to solve puzzles to escape the room. In our Breakout games, the students had to use their knowledge about adding and subtracting to solve a variety of clues that unlocked the locks on our Breakout box (which contained small prizes). The class is looking forward to playing more Breakout games in the future! We've been very lucky to have the Safety Lady visiting our classroom over the past couple of weeks to teach us about safety around our homes and school, along with first aid. She is a true safety expert and she has made her Tuesday visits to our classroom extremely engaging and informative. This week she's coming to teach us all about fire safety. You can expect the students of 2B to be extra vigilant about their own safety and the safety of those around them now!
In Social Studies this past week, we were lucky to have some Acadian artifacts from the Royal Alberta Museum in our classroom. Our class learned about many interesting aspects of Acadian culture, and were able to explore a variety of items including wooden spoons, a jaw harp, hand-crafted wooden games, and some special Acadian folk art such as the rug and quilt. You can check out the pictures below to see some of the interesting artifacts, and what is especially important in Acadian culture!
Now that we’re learning more about the cultures of the three communities we’re focusing on in grade two, the students planned some imaginary vacations this week to Saskatoon. They tried to include details that would educate their readers about the influence of Ukrainian culture in Saskatoon, and imagined what it would like to be in that location with the geography, climate, and available activities. Take a look at our video above and their travelogues below!
If you’ve visited our classroom this week, you may have noticed some cheery snowmen who greeted you in the hallway. We crafted up some snowmen in Art who are just as excited about the snow as we are. These snowmen have clearly learned from our Science unit on Hot and Cold temperatures about the value of insulators such as scarves, and the importance of dressing warmly to avoid hypothermia!
In our first unit in Social Studies, we learned about the land in the communities of Iqaluit in Nunavut, Meteghan in Nova Scotia, and Saskatoon in Saskatchewan. We will now revisit the communities and focus on people and culture in those communities—the Inuit, the Acadians, and the Ukrainians. Through stories, activities and research, we will:
Your child will be better able to make connections with material presented in class if he or she has experiences and knowledge to draw on. Here is how you can help:
We invite you to share your cultural background with us. Would you be willing to come to class and share some information? Do you have any materials you could lend us? Here are some specifics of what we are looking for: Traditions—Are there any traditions, celebrations, special foods or recipes, special games or objects you could show or talk about? Language—Is there another language spoken in your home? Perhaps you and your child could share some simple words or books in that language with the class. Music or Art—Do you have any music or art that reflects your culture? Can you show us any traditional clothing? You can watch the video above to see a glimpse of the lovely people in Iqaluit! Our class has been busy experimenting with various liquids this week since we started our new unit on Exploring Liquids on Monday. There are a lot of hands on experiments to conduct, and the students have already had lots of fun learning about different liquids and their properties. In this unit, we will be learning how to:
Keep an eye out for more of our experiments on liquids over the next couple of months, and watch the videos below if you'd like to keep up with some of the concepts we're learning in class and see 2B's slow motion liquid race! |
