To remember the important sacrifices of our soldiers this Remembrance Day, our class made magnified red poppies that would have come from Flanders Fields. We made these flowers in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe, who we learned about last week in Art. Georgia O’Keeffe is famous for her magnified, detailed approach to portraying flowers. You can watch the videos below to learn more about Georgia O'Keeffe and her flower art. |

Today we learned about the art of Henri Matisse, a painter who was very important in the style of fauve art where artists painted with wild colours. We watched the videos below about Matisse’s art, and used his style to make our own self-portraits. The students did a wonderful job of imitating Matisse’s style, and their choices of pastel colours were lovely! We now have a very colourful set of class portraits. Using our knowledge of 3D objects from our learning about geometry in math in grade two, each student got their own Tinkercad account this month where they could design with a variety of 3D objects with all sorts of vertices, edges, and faces. After working through some tutorials on Tinkercad on how to manipulate and design objects, students used the "Key Ring, Letters!" tutorial on the website to create a custom-designed Father's Day keychains for their dads and grandpas.
Each keychain turned out very special, and they ranged from Star Wars designs to Stanley Cup models to affectionate words of endearment. The students were very proud of the designs that they worked on so independently, and the highlight of the whole project was the printing process when they got to see their keychains gradually take shape on the printer bed. It was meaningful for students to make the connection between their math learning and how that learning is useful in the world of design! Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing 2B dads! The students in our class have been working hard on sculpting inuksuks, writing and handcrafting cards, and decorating their wrapping for their dads. The effort they put into their gifts were evidence of how much they love their dads (and some grandpas)! You can see the photos below for all the thought and effort that went into crafting the Inuit pieces of art!
Happy Mother’s Day! The students were thrilled to take home their Mother’s Day projects this past week that they had worked so hard on. You can check out the students hand-crafted cards and artwork that they were so proud of. Thank you to all you fantastic 2B moms who love your children so very well!
This past week we learned about the artist William Wegman. William Wegman is a photographer who is famous for taking pictures and videos of his Weimeraner dogs wearing costumes. His dogs are very well-trained, and have even appeared on Sesame Street. This month, 2B made our own silly-looking drawings of dogs in human roles. We hope you enjoy The variety of cultures in communities across Canada has been a recent focus in our class, and this week we celebrated Easter Ukrainian style by decorating eggs (or “pysanky”). The students used kitskas and beeswax to create designs on their eggs, and we used real Ukrainian dyes. It was very exciting to see how they turned out after we’d melted all the wax off!
If you’ve visited our classroom this week, you may have noticed some cheery snowmen who greeted you in the hallway. We crafted up some snowmen in Art who are just as excited about the snow as we are. These snowmen have clearly learned from our Science unit on Hot and Cold temperatures about the value of insulators such as scarves, and the importance of dressing warmly to avoid hypothermia!
2B had been working hard the past couple of weeks of school on Christmas stories for their families. We focused on crafting interesting plots and making our ideas clear to our audience (who were the students’ families). They made the wrapping paper, cards, and everything, and were very proud of their creations. You can see all the carefully written stories below! We had some special grade nine guests are our school this week who shared their art expertise with us this week! The girls brought supplies for Christmas ornaments to our class, and 2B fastidiously followed their directions to create their own Santa Claus decorations. 2B was thrilled to have some older students in the classroom, especially such warm and friendly ones!
In Social Studies we’ve been focusing a great deal on what is unique about the land in our three Canadian communities, and this week we used all that we knew about the geography and climate of Saskatoon to create art representing this community at Christmastime. The temperatures in Saskatoon at this time of year are very cold, and the students did an excellent job of representing the farmland, distinctive buildings, and First Nations and Ukrainian cultures in the community. There’s even a grain elevator and combine!
With winter holidays coming up, the students in 2B got to work making some Christmas ornament art to decorate the hall outside our classroom. We read a story about the significance of Christmas ornaments, and the students painted some wonderful christmas ornaments using paint. They turned out beautifully. You can browse through the photos below to see how lovely they look!
Not only are we learning all about hot and cold temperatures in our class, but we can also portray temperatures using colour! We learned about warm and cool temperatures in Art this week, and you can see the winter landscapes that we painted using cool colours (such as purple, blue, and green) below!

We received our ceramic art that we made in the pottery studios in St. Albert from last month, and the students enjoyed finishing up their pieces with some final touches this week. The students made a clay piece depicting a friend, and learned many clay techniques from our art teacher. After spending some time drying and being fired in a kiln, 2B was thrilled to see how well their finished pieces turned out!
In a month that we often associate with fear, we were inspired to paint like Edvard Munch and make our very own versions of his piece “The Scream.” We learned about Munch’s history as an artist, and looked at many examples of other artists’ adaptations of “The Scream.” The students painted their own background of a sunset on the sea, and posed with their best poses of terror! Their pieces of art turned out brilliantly, as you can see below.
This past Tuesday, we celebrated Dot Day in 2B. Dot Day is based on the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds about a girl named Vashti who initially believes she can't draw, but later discovers that everyone can make a mark in the world. 6 million people celebrated Dot Day this year, and we marked the occasion in 2B by dressing up in dots, making dots with aspirations of how we wanted to "make our mark," and even watching a livestream of the author Peter Reynolds reading his book and speaking about how we can all make a mark in the world. You can see the students' ideas and the book "The Dot" below! |
