This week during our current events time in Social Studies, our class had a discussion about the proposed Alldritt Tower that developers would like to build in Edmonton. When we discussed the tower, Edmonton's city council was holding a public hearing on whether the 80-storey tower was too tall or not. 2B has been learning about the differences between fact and opinion, and they've become very respectful debaters on matters of opinion. Some students felt that the building would block other people's views, could stick out too much in Edmonton's shorter skyline, and might be dangerous. Others felt that it could provide good housing opportunities for people in the area, and could be a distinctive feature in the city. A more moderate group agreed that the tower should be built with some modifications that they outlined. You can read about the public hearings here, and see how Edmonton' s city council approved the tower here. Perhaps we have a few future Spruce Grove city councillors in our class!

We were lucky to borrow a collection of Ukrainian artifacts from the Royal Alberta Museum, and we learned a great deal about Ukrainian culture. We learned about the traditions that distinguish their weddings, funerals, and religious celebrations, and enjoyed seeing some of their games and currency up close. The students each created their own virtual museum with a Ukrainian artifact exhibit which you can enjoy on their individual blogs using the links to the right (you can see a few of them below as well if you'd like). 2B has been working hard in our look at 2D shapes and 3D objects in Math this week. We’ve learned how to describe and compare shapes and objects using words like vertices, edges, faces, and length. You can see some of our explorations in the pictures below!
This past week we learned about the artist William Wegman. William Wegman is a photographer who is famous for taking pictures and videos of his Weimeraner dogs wearing costumes. His dogs are very well-trained, and have even appeared on Sesame Street. This month, 2B made our own silly-looking drawings of dogs in human roles. We hope you enjoy In our recent Social Studies look at work across Canada, we’ve been learning about the variety of natural resources in our countries different regions and what goods are made using those natural resources. The students used their recent learning this week to imagine pretend businesses and with a natural resource and good that they pretended to make out of that resource. You can check out the videos on this post and in the students’ individual blogs to learn more about goods and natural resources! The variety of cultures in communities across Canada has been a recent focus in our class, and this week we celebrated Easter Ukrainian style by decorating eggs (or “pysanky”). The students used kitskas and beeswax to create designs on their eggs, and we used real Ukrainian dyes. It was very exciting to see how they turned out after we’d melted all the wax off! We drew Easter bunnies just before the Easter break this week, and the students used their measuring skills to measure their bunnies afterward. We chose the unit of ones cubes because they weren’t too big or too small for the parts of the bunny that we were measuring, and it was neat to see how the measurements between bunnies were similar and different!
We enjoyed our big in school field trip where we explored buoyancy and boats this week! We conducted many experiments, learned a great deal about what causes objects to sink or float, and the students even got to construct their own boats! It was a great afternoon of learning. Special thanks to our instructor Elaine, our volunteers, and Mrs. K!
We've been working on boats in our classroom since Spring Break, and the students have highly enjoyed exploring how different materials float or sink in the water and have done some excellent problem-solving in our boat challenges. There is also quite a lot of excitement among some students who have been reading about the Titanic and discussing why it sunk! Because of our in-school field trip this upcoming week, we will be wrapping this unit up by the end of the month. In our unit on buoyancy and boats, students will work to achieve the following outcomes:
We made good use of our two-digit addition and subtraction skills this week as the students set up their own classroom stores and went shopping with pretend Millgrove Gift Certificates. There was lots of adding sums, subtracting to figure out change, and thinking about how we use math in our everyday lives!
