This week during our current events time in Social Studies, our class had a discussion about the proposed Alldritt Tower that developers would like to build in Edmonton. When we discussed the tower, Edmonton's city council was holding a public hearing on whether the 80-storey tower was too tall or not. 2B has been learning about the differences between fact and opinion, and they've become very respectful debaters on matters of opinion. Some students felt that the building would block other people's views, could stick out too much in Edmonton's shorter skyline, and might be dangerous. Others felt that it could provide good housing opportunities for people in the area, and could be a distinctive feature in the city. A more moderate group agreed that the tower should be built with some modifications that they outlined. You can read about the public hearings here, and see how Edmonton' s city council approved the tower here. Perhaps we have a few future Spruce Grove city councillors in our class!
