On our Participark walk today, we paused at a few different points along the way and paid attention to the sounds we observed in nature. We noticed the sounds of birds, melting snow running through the storm drain, wind rustling the branches and leaves, squirrels chirping, and our footsteps in the snow. In the context of our Science unit on Hearing and Sound, it was fun to experience all the sounds around us! |

We've been working on our skills in different paddle sports this month, and this week the class started practicing some skills in Pickleball. Next week we'll try playing some games which the students are excited for. You can see more about Pickleball below! PE this month has been focused on soccer skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting! The students learned how to control the ball and trap it when needed, and got lots of practice moving around at different speeds while dribbling the ball. Next we'll be trying out some badminton skills in PE! The class was happy to visit the Participark today, especially because we were curious to check out the effects of the snow squall on the trees (which seemed mostly minimal)!
The class enjoyed the pleasant weather today and set to work building a quinzee during our PE time. You can watch the video below to learn more strategies for building a strong and safe quinzee! This week in PE we've been playing some cooperative games and trying out centres in the gym (not rotating centres this year because of sanitization protocols). The students especially enjoyed group juggling and scooters this week. Of course, they highly enjoyed playing hide and seek in the woods as usual on our weekly Participark walk!
Our class has officially completed more than 5000 minutes of home reading, so we got to have a PJ Day in 3B on Wednesday! It was the perfect weather to wear cozy outfits, and we even wrapped up our PE basketball unit in style! We’ll keep tracking our home reading in agendas this month to see when we get to have our next PJ Day!
On our Participark walk this week, we made use of our math skills as we went on a mathematical scavenger hunt! The students had to make some increasing patterns, count and create some referents using leaves, and practice their estimation skills. We had unexpectedly beautiful weather, and we had a great time in the woods as usual!
We celebrated the 10th annual Take Me Outside Day this week, which is a Canadian initiative that encourages schools to extend the classroom beyond four walls and a desk to engage with natural areas. Our class has really enjoyed our time in the woods this year, and this year especially it’s lovely to take a break from the classroom and get some fresh air. The day before Take Me Outside Day, we took part in a concert by Remy Rodden who sang songs about Canada’s flora and fauna, and taught us some interesting facts about the outdoors. We joined thousands of other classes across the country and were proud to brave the chilly temperatures as true Canadians do We got to enjoy the first snowy day of this school year with a walk in the woods! The class enjoyed playing hide and seek amongst the trees and exploring the sights, sounds, and smells of the changing weather.
With more time spent in our seats during class time this year, our class has enjoyed a variety of ways to be active and move our bodies during the day at school. Activities from Go Noodle are always a crowd favourite, and the class has enjoyed our walks to the Participark and time on the playground. Now that the weather is cooling down, we will be moving on from some field games like Capture the Flag to some gym activities like basketball and cooperative games this week!
We've been practicing our estimating skills in 3B this week, and the students put those skills to use on our Participark walk today! 3K joined us on our walk to collet leaves, and we secretly made piles of leaves with different amounts, and then used referent piles to estimate the amount of leaves. The students had some impressively accurate estimates!
The students have become more comfortable with having an informed estimate that doesn't exactly match their subsequent count. In grade three, students use referents to help inform their estimates of amounts up to 1000! You can see photos of some of our math activities from the past week, and click on the game below to practice more estimation. We ran our annual Terry Fox run today and Millgrove seemed likely to meet our fundraising goal of $1000! The students were very inspired by the story of Terry and how he put others first. They ran hard in the run, and showed great concern for the people they were running for. Our class helped to make the assembly video for this year's run, which you can see above!
We had balmy weather as we snowshoed with our friends in 2A this past week! The students were troopers as they put on and took off the snowshoes and explored the area around the school. A special thanks goes out to our wonderful volunteers who patiently helped all the students with the process, and made it a very fun and memorable afternoon!
This Wednesday was the 14th annual winter walk day in Alberta, and our class enjoyed participating with most other classes at Millgrove. 2B went on a walk through the Participark and explored some of the trails and nature there. After the walk, we had some hot chocolate to warm up after our long journey. It was a great day to enjoy some fresh air, get some exercise, and have fun with our classmates! This week we've been practicing a variety of basketball skills, and the class has really enjoyed passing, dribbling, and shooting in PE. The students have been working hard to be in control of the ball like an NBA player, and have been extra careful to keep the ball in their own space. You can watch the video above to see some of the basketball form we've been trying out in PE class!
The students were thrilled this week to play golf in PE! We practiced our mini-golf skills and also swing skills in a small-scale driving range. For our Play Parkland field trip, we got to go swimming and then play some movement games on one of the outdoor fields. We had lots of fun and lots of learning in all of these alternative activities this week!
Our first Play Parkland visit was a huge success as the students of 2B (and our friends in 2S) had a great time and learned a ton about gymnastics. We had very knowledgeable coaches and the students really enjoyed getting to use the equipment at the Aerials Gymnastics Club. The students haven’t stopped asking when we get to go again!
We ran our annual Terry Fox run today and Millgrove is still counting all our fundraising to see if we raised enough for Mr. Lillico to get a pie-in-the-face! The students were very inspired by the story of Terry and how he put others first. They ran hard in the run, and showed great concern for the people they were running for! PE this month has been focused on learning expectations for the gym and building teamwork skills by playing cooperative games! They especially enjoyed getting across the lava-like gym floor as a team using gym equipment, and playing Colours. Next up in PE, we'll be brushing up on our running skills!
