The grade 1-4 students at Millgrove were very fortunate to work with Asha from Sound Kreations this past week on a dance performance! Pairs of classes worked on unique dance routines, and we had our big dance performance on Friday where students got to show off all that they had learned with Asha. The students were inspired to push themselves far as dancers this week, and their performances were spectacular!

In PE this week, we followed up our track meet by using a frisbee to throw like a discus, and also learned how to pass and catch a frisbee and play frisbee golf. The students were especially impressive with their distance of frisbee throws! This week our class had the privilege of working on archery with Mr. Cherry and two grade four junior coaches! Thanks to Mr. Cherry, students were invited to work with him on their archery skills during the lunch hour, and they felt rightly proud of their archery skills!
Millgrove’s second annual track meet was a great success today as students got to try out all sorts of track and field events and enjoy a beautiful morning outside. We tried out long distance running, hurdles, three-legged races, and all sorts of other challenges. Our class has been working on various track and field skills in the past couple of weeks, so it was great for students to make use of their growing PE abilities. 2B also watched some of the track and field footage the last summer Olympics in Rio, which they found very exciting! Our May weather has been splendid so far, and we’ve been taking advantage of these warm days with lots of outdoor PE. We learned the rules of Capture the Flag this week, and soon we'll be honing our skills in kickball and Predator vs. Prey. Here’s hoping that more outdoor PE days lie ahead!
This week we got to practice our badminton skills in PE! It is tricky to learn to control the birdie with the racket, but the students worked hard and got some great rallies in by the end of the week. You can watch the world's longest badminton rally below, which was 108 shots! This month we've been practicing a variety of basketball skills, and the class has really enjoyed passing, dribbling, and shooting in PE. The students have been working hard to be in control of the ball like an NBA player, and have been extra careful to keep the ball in their own space. You can watch the video above to see some of the basketball form we've been trying out in PE class!
We were lucky to have the gymnastics equipment set up at Millgrove this week, and the students really enjoyed practicing different gymnastics skills and learning from the gymnastics pro Mrs. C! We'll be even more ready for gymnastics at the Aerials Gymnastics Club in a few weeks!
PE this month has been focused on learning expectations for the gym and building teamwork skills by playing cooperative games! They especially enjoyed getting across the lava-like gym floor as a team using gym equipment, and playing Colours. Next up in PE, we'll be brushing up on our running skills!

We had an awesome time this past week at the Tri-Leisure Centre as we played some games on the field, ate lunch accompanied by the viewing of a shinny hockey game, and got a skating lesson from our great instructor Christine. Thanks so much to all the parents who helped tie and untie skates, and even a couple who got on the ice to help the students! We couldn't have made it out on the ice without your help, so we really appreciate you!
We were very lucky this week to have the Jump Rope for Heart team visit our school as we start our Jump Rope for Heart initiative at Millgrove, and they were joined by a very special guest. Neil King who plays Safety for the Edmonton Eskimos (along with his brother) joined the other Millgrove skippers as they taught us about being physically active and making healthy choices. It was a very exciting and inspiring assembly to be sure! Our first Play Parkland visit was a huge success as the students of 2B (and our friends in 2CV) had a great time and learned a ton about gymnastics. We had very knowledgeable coaches and the students really enjoyed getting to use the equipment at the Aerials Gymnastics Club. The students haven’t stopped asking when we get to go again

Because of the timing, we missed out on watching the summer Olympics as a class, but we’ve had a blast checking out a few Canadian athletes in the Paralympics this month! Mr. Barker’s brother plays on a wheelchair rugby team with the incredibly talented Zak Madell, so we’ve had a great time cheering for Team Canada and sending/receiving messages from Zak. 2B felt that the Canadians were doing so well in the Paralympics that “they were stealing all the medals,” and expressed commendable sympathy for the other teams. What a sweet class we have!
Millgrove’s first track meet was a great success on Tuesday as students got to try out all sorts of challenges and enjoy a beautiful morning outside. Many of the students in 2B took shifts helping at our beanbag toss which was a huge help! We talked about how the beanbag toss is excellent preparation for the field events of shot-put, discus, and javelin! Our May weather has been splendid so far, and we’ve been taking advantage of these warm days with lots of outdoor PE. Mrs. Steigel taught us the rules of Capture the Flag this week, and we’ve also been honing our skills in kickball and Predator vs. Prey. Here’s hoping that more outdoor PE days lie ahead!
This past Wednesday was the 10th annual winter walk day in Alberta, and our class enjoyed participating with most other classes at Millgrove. 2B went on a scavenger hunt making use of the cardinal directions we have learned in Social Studies. It was a great day to enjoy some fresh air, get some exercise, and have fun with our classmates!
We had a splendid afternoon of skating at Stu Barnes Arena on Thursday afternoon. Thanks so much to all the volunteers who helped with tying and untying laces! It was a great time for all the students! You can watch the video below to see some highlights from our afternoon. |
