Miss Careless taught our class a wonderful unit on dance this month! The students were thrilled to try out a variety of their own dance moves, and put together some very impressive dance routines with their friends. The Tik Tok fans in our class were especially in their element, and there was lots of fun learning in Miss Careless' lessons!
We took a close look at some of the creatures and larvae from some collected pond water this week! As we're studying animal life cycles, it was neat to take a close look some insects at different stages of their life cycle, and observe their behaviour in the water!
It's national poetry month and we're learning lots about writing poetry in 3B! We've read lots of wonderful and varied poetry, and in our poetry writing we've been learning about how poets write about things that they observe and care about, poets should pay close attention to the world around them and the feelings inside, and poets revise their poems as they write. The students have enjoyed reading their poems to each other, and reading reading poems to our chicks! Coming up in our writing, we'll learn more about language, form, revision, and building poetry anthologies. You can read some of the poems we've been inspired by here and read some of our poems below. Check out Seesaw to read some of your child's poetry!
The students successfully completed the research and writing for their non-fiction animal books this week! They typed up all their findings in a variety of subtopics, and published their illustrated books to the library! Mrs. Smith added barcodes and put our books in the library catalogue so that the rest of the school can take them out. To celebrate we had a well-deserved book publishing party and got to share our reports with each other. It's always satisfying to see our hard work in writing pay off!
The students have been thrilled by our recent learning about Ukraine! Miss Careless has taught us about mysterious ancient coins, the story of Chernobyl, the history of Ukraine in the Soviet Union, along with many other interesting aspects of Ukrainian culture and quality of life. Recently each student researched a different Ukrainian dish to add to our class' Ukrainian Recipe Book! Because this year we can't sample Ukrainian food, it was a fun substitute to learn about these cultural foods and how they're made. You can see our recipe book below!
We were very lucky to have Mr. Cherry come visit today and teach us all about the chicken life cycle! We got to candle a couple of the eggs, and we learned all about the different parts of the egg that allow the chick to develop inside. We're lucky to have such an egg-cellent egg-spert (as Mr. Cherry would say) at Millgrove! Today we got to take part in a Google Meet with Mrs. Lakusta and some other classes from our school division to learn about the art of the renowned First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers. Mrs. Lakusta taught us how to use Google Drawing to create the art, and after some hard work, the class finished some very impressive art inspired by Roy Henry Vickers' piece Whaler Islets. You can see your child's art on Seesaw! We've been playing speedball in PE this week, and the class has done a wonderful job working as a team to share the ball and try to earn points. The teams are allowed to use a "warm defence" to stop the other team's progress and get the ball back, and there has been lots of good sportsmanship and team spirit in the games so far!
We're starting a new unit this week in Math on Data Analysis. Data analysis relates to the collection, organization, and interpretation of information.
In this unit, your child will:
Here are some suggestions for activities you can do with your child.
For the next couple of months in Social Studies our class will be focusing on the country of Ukraine! So far the students have noticed that Ukraine has some features in common with Canada, and the class particularly enjoyed learning the game "Tzurki Palki" from Miss Careless this week. Ukrainian sports, industries, and communities have been interesting so far, and in the next week we'll get to learn lots about Ukrainian culture. ми не можемо чекати (we can't wait)!
We were very this lucky this week to have the chicken lady deliver 24 eggs for our class! The eggs are settled into the incubator now where they're toasty warm and carefully rotating. This will be the beginning of our Science unit on Animal Life Cycles. Next week we're going to take a peek inside by candling the eggs with Mr. Cherry, and in the coming weeks the chicks will start to peck their ways out of their shells! The class is already eagerly observing the chicks' progress!
